Fall 2021 Income Security Extern

The Position

The National Women’s Law Center (the Center) seeks a law student extern for the fall 2021 semester for the Income Security team to support the Center’s work advocating to increase the economic security of women and families with low incomes. Law students who are available to commit 12 to 15 hours or more per week during the fall semester are eligible to apply. This will be a remote externship. The Center will work with the extern to secure academic credit.

About the Organization

The National Women’s Law Center fights for gender justice—in the courts, in public policy, and in our society—working across the issues that are central to the lives of women and girls.

We use the law in all its forms to change culture and drive solutions to the gender inequity that shapes our society and to break down the barriers that harm all of us—especially women of color, LGBTQ people, and low-income women and families.

For almost 50 years, we have been on the leading edge of every major legal and policy victory for women. Find out more at NWLC.org.

The National Women’s Law Center Action Fund is a 501(c)4 affiliate of NWLC, aiming to drive progressive change in our policies and laws so that all women and girls can live, learn, and work with safety, dignity, and equality.

Extern Duties and Responsibilities

The student selected will be assigned to one attorney mentor but may work with several attorneys during the course of the semester and with the larger Income Security and Child Care/Early Learning team. The extern will support advocacy around federal budget and appropriations, anti-poverty programs critical to women’s economic security, as well as some potential tax policy work. This work includes tracking federal and state legislation; attending Congressional proceedings, coalition and community partnership meetings and policy briefings; and supporting the preparation of NWLC products like fact sheets, reports, or comments on proposed federal agency regulations or Requests for Information. This externship will not likely involve litigation activities.

How to Apply

Submit a cover letter indicating that you are interested in an externship with the Income Security team, when you are available to extern, and how many hours per week you can extern. A full application includes a cover letter, resume, transcript, a 5-10 page writing sample (a policy-based writing sample is preferred over a legal brief), and contact information for three references. Electronic submissions are preferred. Please submit your complete application to [email protected] and include the position title in the subject line.

The National Women’s Law Center is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer and values a diverse workforce.  We strongly encourage and seek applications from people with disabilities; people of all gender identities and sexual orientations; people of color; and veterans.
